I Remember The Fear.
A Memory of Barwick.
I do not have that many clear memories from my stay there, I have a defence mechanism of blotting things out from my mind.
I do not know exactly when I was there some time between 1974 - 1977.
The only name I remember from that time was the Major.
Here are some of the less traumatic things I remember which someone may also remember and will be able to narrow down the date.
Trip out on HMS Apollo, when we returned to port there was a German warship docked and armed sailors on guard.
Caring bricks to build the parade building.
Doing a parade inspection and we were given a marching command that we were not taught.
Going to some place, don't know if it was a quarry or something and a young person fell,
Shrimping near Chisel Beach.
Not religious, but remember feeling safe whilst in the local church.
Running away and failing.
My best memory from that time was when my social worker was taking me to Victoria Station to get the coach back, I cried saying I had a headache and she stopped to go into a shop to get me pain killers, whilst she was gone I legged it. She still put my case on the coach which I never got back, only the belongings.
I still occasionally fold my socks in the way we had to fold our Cadet socks.
I think that I also remember something about a hand grenade found in the lake.
63 and still kicking, now work supporting kids leaving care.
