More about this scene

In 1869 the Grand Pump Room Hotel opened. Designed by Wilson and Wilcox, its ponderous late Georgian style had the side wings topped by Frenchified pavilion roofs. It closed the vista west along Abbey Churchyard from the Abbey's west front, past the Pump Room, and through the north Colonnade. Demolished in 1959, it was replaced by pallid Neo-Georgian work.

The Hotel Lions
Two Stone sculptured Lions were situated at the entrance steps of the Grand Pump Room Hotel before it was sadly demolished in 1958/59 during the so called "Rape of Bath". They were removed by Sparrows Crane Hire of Bath, Alf Sparrow and myself removed them to a builders yard at the rear of Bath Rugby Club's Main building, they disappeared for a long time. Architectural Notes
As a former resident of Bath I recall that this building was not particularly liked. In 1959 the hotel was demolished and a block of 33 flats at 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor level with shops at the ground floor was built. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
