More about this scene
The Roman town of Aquae Sulis, now Bath, grew up at the point where the Fosse Way crossed the river Avon. The name indicates that the waters were sacred to the native goddess Sul, whom the Romans identified with the god Minerva. The resultant temple was therefore dedicated to the goddess Sul Minerva.
