More about this scene
At the time of this photograph, the statue and its pier and chain railings is still crisp and fresh-looking, and the replanted limes are young. Around the plinth are bronze panels showing scenes from 'Pilgrim's Progress', which was published in 1678 and was one of the best sellers in the English language for centuries. Bunyan was born in Elstow; after service on the Parliamentary side in the Civil War he moved to Bedford, where his nonconformity led to spells in Bedford Gaol.
