More about this scene
A little further west, at the start of the Embankment Gardens, Frith's photographer has not quite got his focus correct. The urn on its pedestal was renewed in 1948. It has a plaque informing us that it was presented by the Indiana Limestone Co Inc to the people of Great Britain from 'The Stone City of the World', Bedford's namesake: Bedford, Indiana, in the USA.
