Bedlinog Childhood

A Memory of Bedlinog.

I lived my first 11 years at 5 Mary Street 1954-65. I also went to junior off the square, at that time Mr Mitchell was headmaster and Mr Borrat was there too, he used to make a point of coming up to me during lunch in the hall and saying "you know that custard is not Birds don't you?( My surname was Larke') my teacher in 11 plus year was Mrs Knight, very strict and handy with a ruler! She also taught my mother and used to bring out her old exercise books and ask me why I couldn't write neatly like her! She also had some amazing plastic overshoes that she used to wear in winter over her smart court shoes!
We had a coal fire in the classroom and our milk which often arrived frozen was put in front of it to defrost! I can still remember the taste of half warm/half icy milk!
