More about this scene
The Royal Mail Steamer 'Adder' made the link with Glasgow by sailing to Ardrossan. This avoided the long journey along the Clyde Estuary - the route was completed by rail. For this daylight crossing, the train will have left Glasgow central at 9.07am with passengers arriving at Princes Quay at 4pm. The vessel was not very old; perhaps conditions at Ardrossan dictated the use of paddle propulsion at a time when screw had become the norm.
