Bembridge, the easternmost settlement on the Isle of Wight, became popular in late Victorian times as a centre for golf, being the headquarters of the Isle of Wight Golf Club. Early golfers found they had to take a ferry to the links on the far side of Brading Harbour if they wanted a game.
