More about this scene
This older part of the original Bexhill, or rather Bexle, was Saxon in origin. History records that in 772 King Offa of Mercia gave a grant of land to enlarge the parish church. By the time of Domesday Book, 'Bexelei' was recorded as a small village, which had scarcely recovered from the Norman invasion.
