Bexhill had been a fishing village before 1884, when the words 'on-Sea' were added to its name. Thereafter the resort expanded on to the low-lying ground between the old hillside village and the sea. Bexhill's Parade was constructed on top of the sea wall that had been built in the 1880s as a coastal defence.
