Memories Of Bexley Technical High School For Girls.

A Memory of Bexleyheath.

I was at this school from about 1961- 1966 after passing the 13+ exam. I went to Hall Place first, what a wonderful place it was! I remember Miss Moore who was the headmistress, we had Mrs. Hodgson for geography and Mrs. Kendrick for sports. My name then was Ruby Little, but I hated my first name and changed it to Victoria now Mrs Fenlon, as soon as I could! I think at the 'big' school I was in JDSX and remember there were two girls named Barbara Williams, distinguished as Barbara June and Barbara Ann, and I think also a Jennofer Williams who was keen on campinology, plus I was great friends with Susan Beer. I stayed into the 6th form and I think Mrs Tucker was our form mistress and of course Miss Fuller was the head! When my class first met Mrs Richards for French we each had to read a paragraph from our French book; when I'd read mine she praised my accent and from that point I found French easy leaving me to get top marks for O and A level exams! I remember Miss Skews for English who often had us in stitches, our 6th form mistress was Mrs Tucker and I remember Miss Pike for maths at which I was dreadful, and Miss Fowler was for domestic science, with Mrs Rogers for speech and drama, and I think we had Miss Peters for sport. In early December 1965 my Father found me unconscious in the drawing room at home, after I'd had a really bad headache at school a few days before; I was blue-lighted to the Brook Hospital in Shooters Hill (now long gone!) where I was diagnosed with brain abscesses. I had to have my hair shaved for several operations on my brain. I returned to school after the Easter break in April 1966 with very short hair, just like Twiggy! I left school that year with good GCE passes and started my nurse training. After passing my registration exam I worked locally as a staff nurse but took extra training in psychiatrics and midwifery, before meeting my husband. I now live in Birchington Kent aged 75 with my husband, and family nearby, with my 3rd great grandchild expected in June. I look back on my schooldays with fondness, especially at Hall Place!
