The Green And Heversham Rd

A Memory of Bexleyheath.

It is clear from the post from John Howard Norfolk that he and I have some shared memories.I lived at No15 Heversham Rd,Saturday morning minors at the Regal, riding the 401 or 486 to go shopping with my mother in the Broadway.playing football on the green.I attended Pelham Road Junior school and then moved on to Graham Road Secondary Modern about 1955 till 1959 when i started work.Mr Lester was the head Master a strict but fair man with a strong right hand to wield the cane.Alan Wainwright and his sister Patsy lived some way down the road and i knew him reasonably well.I knew Eric York, Rodney and Graham Tabbrett and Keith Hawkins not to leave out the girls Wendy Carr and her friend Gay Ewin all of us were of the same age so i have happy memories of those days. The dump and Bursted woods were other favoured play grounds last i heard was the woods had become a school.I drove my first car through those woods just to prove it could be done great fun.On saturday mornings when not going to the Regal and during school holidays i used to help the milkman with his deliveries.Horse and cart in those days out of the Co Op at the top of the road guess that has disappeared too.Now that i am 70 years old [born March 1944]i often look back to those carefree days and feel that i was lucky to be born at that time ,the war was over and sweet rationing was soon to stop, very important to some one the age i was then 2/0 shillings from Dad and a free reign to by what ever sweets i wanted sheer bliss.CONTACT WITH ANY OF THE ABOVE METIONED WOULD BE WELCOMED

Hi Geoff, Just read your post (3 years later). NIce to hear your memories. You were 2 years older than me, and I lived over the road at No 18. Next to the Applebees, who incidentally had Emily as a lodger. Did she not move to the seaside with your sister Rene? Remember your cars well - did you not have a Mk II Jag at one time? Graham Tabrett moved to Oz, but you were the same age as his brother Rodney. Keith Hawkins joined the police and ended up living at the back of Wendy Carr in Walderslade or thereabouts. Small world. I well remember your dad, who used to carry a tiny suitcase to work with him everyday. We moved to Grace Avenue in 65, then I joined the army in 66, and that was it then really for Bexleyheath. My old dear died at 97 with all her buttons on. In fact our terrace in Heversham had quite a good record for logevity. Mrs Eade at No 20 lived until 104, and Charlie Applebee and Mr Turner at No 22 both lived well into their 90's. I have a postcard of the street taken sometime in the early 50's which shows Alf Clarke's old Austin on it. I will post it on the site. His daughter Evelyn still lives there I believe. Jennifer Curtis at No 15 lived there until about 10 years ago when she died. Final memory, you used to have a large empty fish tank in your back garden!
Take care
Forgot to add my name! Peter Scott. My sister was Angela and my mother worked some nights at the chippy on Long Lane.
