More about this scene
Still adorning the river front, this historic building is no longer a pub. After the last war it became a restaurant for many years; then the ground floor was converted to a fried fish and chip shop, a function it fulfills to this day. The 19th-century author Charles Kingsley was passionately fond of Devon; Rose of Torridge and the Brotherhood of the Rose feature in his best-known book, 'Westward Ho!'
