In the 18th century this waterway was busy transporting coal, and possibly large cheeses too, for Tom Rowe the Lancashire cheese factor lived in Bilsborrow. Nowadays its popular, quiet tree-fringed length carries canal boats refurbished for tourists. Richard Turner, one of the temperance leaders, was born in Bilsborrow. Speaking at Preston Cockpit, he inadvertently invented the word 'teetotal'—Dicky stammered! The water drinkers never let him forget, and teetotal taverns were attached to some of the Fylde inns for travellers shunning alcohol.
