I Also Remember The Ice Cream Parlour In Birchington
A Memory of Birchington.
The ice cream here was superb it was called 'ABSOPURE' as far as I can remember , I was in Birchington last year 2013 & wanted to visit the Ice Cream parlour but it was closed which was a disappointment for me
Happy memories of Birchington in the 50's with my dear Nan & Granddad & great aunt Mag (next door) I loved the place (still do) cant wait to go back
My Nan & Garndad lived at 127 Park Avenue, it was there that I spent most of my school Holidays up until I left school at the age of 15.
I loved Birchington & still do... I hope my wife and I can go back again in 2016

They too lived in Park Avenue, but at the other end next to the caravan park where my grandad was the groundsman.
The ice cream parlour was a favourite of ours too. The original ice cream was fantastic and to eat in with an ice cream with chocolate sauce on the lovely silver dish is something to always remember, with a lemonade and a scoop of ice cream in it. We took our children there as well.
It is still the only place we go if we want to go to the seaside.
they were very happy days I often drive down Park Avenue when we visit Birchington & I look at Nan & Grandad's old house (now unrecognizable) ..The ice cream parlour was our ultimate treat, do you remember the 'Economic store' in Birchington square must have been one of the 1st bargain stores...keep posting the lovely comments...your Grandparents lived at the other end of Park Avenue..the caravan park is still there I believe ..I recently heard from an old playmate who lived in 108 Park Avenue, that was nice
We didn't have a car and travelled down to Nan's on the train from London. Therefore when I visited we always caught the bus if going into Margate to The Winter Gardens etc or family visiting in St Nicholas. After I married we always drove down to visit.
When going to Minnis Bay I always walked across the fields and over the railway track. Did you do the same? Not sure if you can still do that.
we played several times at Dreamland ballroom Margate & my Nan would come & see us play, She would catch the EAST KENT bus & we would give her a lift home in the group van ..she was lovely & I loved her so much.
Yes we use to walk across the cornfields & railway track to Minnis, not sure if you still can do that...I remember seeing Frankie Vaughan at the Winter Gardens... I wonder if the Ice cream parlour is still open ,,,must check it out
so many memories
we are off to Birchington again mid September (must have my fix), staying at Minnis. I am so looking forward to it again
& hope the Parlour (ice cream parlour) is open this time,
plan to meet up with my cousin & Aunt & no doubt will drive down Park Avenue several times although I think a walk across the cornfields will be out of order this time.
I hope you have enjoyed your trip to Birchington and that the parlour was open this time. Because a lot of the artistes appearing at the Winter Gardens stayed at the Court Mount caravan site, where grandad worked I got to know quite a few of them. We became great friends with Beryl Reid and she was always popping in to have a cup of tea or sample a glad of two of grandad 's home made wines! She would take me to the theatre with her in her little sports car, which I thought was great at the time. She really was a delightful lady. When my grandad was taken to hospital with appendicitis she would take nan and I in to visit him at the Royal Sea Bathing hospital.
