Shoppers on Newgate Street in 1923 were seeing prices slowly returning their pre-war levels. In 1914 a pound of butter at the Meadow Dairy Co would have cost 1s 3d; by 1920 the war had pushed the price up to 2s 11d. Similarly, cheese costing 8d a pound in 1914 had hit 1s 8d by 1920, and a dozen eggs had rocketed from 1s 3d to an outrageous 4s 11d.
