Sshooldays In Blackburn

A Memory of Blackburn.

I moved with my parents from Preston to Blackburn in 1946 We lived on Park Avenue off Shear Brow attended Four Lanes End CP School on Revidge Road where I was very happy My recollections of that school was a teacher called Mr Sharples who when he caught you whispering in class would throw the wooden board duster at you Mrs Hargreaves who was the top class teacher and Miss Jackson the headmistress who unfortunately was knocked down and killed at the top of East Park Road I remember going to Blakey Moor swimming baths with school We had to walk from school in twos It was a long way for little legs I remember just before I took my 11plus my mother talking to Miss Jackson who said there was no way I was going to pass the exam but I decided to prove them wrong ,passed, and was given a place at Blackburn High School for Girls I regretted it because after the first 12mths I couldn t keep up with the work There was a teacher there called Mrs Scollick who I was frightened to death of She took us for Maths after the first two years. I always remember doing an algebra correction 19 times before she marked it right and that s after I d copied it off one of my friends !! I dropped Maths as soon as I could purely because of Mrs Schollick and just did arithmetic with Miss Ormerod I thought I had managed to get away from Mrs Schollick
but unfortunately for me in the following school year she became my form mistress I was not a happy bunny Joan Duxbury nee Shaw 1951- 1956 Blackburn High School
