Welfare Park From 1969 To 1977
A Memory of Blackhall Colliery.
My Dad was head groundsman from 1969 to 1977, so we lived in the bungalow in the park.
I have fond memories of the the start of the bowls and putt season from good Friday.
We had a pleasant view from our sitting room window of the park and dene beyond.
The bungalow was cosy with its own garden. I used to watch cricket and play putt. I used to get a ride on the back of the lawnmower and on the powered roller.
I remember the Crawleyside coach disaster in which several bowls players lost their lives in 1969 and a memorial was constructed near the bungalow.
