More about this scene
This view is taken from Talbot Square. The oldest of the town's three piers, this one dates from 1863, and when it opened was known simply as Blackpool Pier. By that time, Blackpool's nearby rival Southport had had a pier for three years; it was 1,200 yards long and capable of handling excursion steamers.
