More about this scene

Originally unveiled at Forgeside in 1960, this obelisk in memory of Sidney Gilchrist Thomas is now at the Blaenavon ironworks. The bronze head on the statue was designed and cast by the sculptor Fred Mancini. Thomas and his cousin Percy Carlyle Gilchrist, more famous abroad than in this country, were responsible in 1878-79 for a process which eliminated phosphorus in steel production.
