More about this scene
Boroughbridge dates back to Norman times, when a bridge was constructed over the River Ure. In more modern times the town was a major coaching post on the great North Road, and several fine inns survive here. The first mail coach from London reached here on 16 October 1789, superseded a century later by the railway. Just beyond the old Swan Hotel, centre left, is the entrance to Boroughbridge Hall.
