Bournemouth's Pier stands above the original mouth of the Bourne Stream. Its construction marked the town's commitment to its role as a resort. The mildness of the climate first attracted visitors to the town, and it rapidly acquired a reputation as a place beneficial to consumptives. Note the boy sweeping the sand away.
