Bournemouth, once in Hampshire but now in Dorset, did not exist two hundred years ago. In 1810, Lewis Tregonwell built a house on lonely heathland close to the mouth of the River Bourne. During the years that followed other wealthy Hampshire gentlemen followed his example. It was to be the very end of the century before the town became popular as a holiday resort.
