The Gables Westbourne

A Memory of Bournemouth.

Reading my Mother's notes in my 'Baby Book ' ,something seemingly not done nowadays, I was reminded that I was born in a Private nursing home, The Gables, Pine Tree Glen ,Westbourne in 1947. Now flats and ironically retirement flats. Somewhere for me to be born and die. Ha Ha. The Doctor was Dr Gallop* who had a practice in Poole, How my parents could afford it I don't know, My father was in the Navy until 1945 and had a problem finding work so at that time was a Porter in Sandbanks Hotel. Living in, at the now demolished building next to it. He had met my Mother whilst docking in Denmark marking the end of the war. A very brave widow with 2 children who then moved to England for a new life. *When we moved to Alderney ,Parkstone some 31/2 miles away from Dr Gallop's surgery he was still our Local Doctor. So a 15 minutes walk and bus ride to see him. How things have changed.
