Box Hill, The Stepping Stones To Boxhill 1932

More about this scene
On our left as we approach Dorking from the north are the Stepping Stones. Contrary to belief, the much-photographed Stepping Stones are not that old. They were originally put into position in 1932, but by 1946 they had deteriorated; they were replaced at the expense of James Chuter Ede, then Home Secretary, who had spent his schooldays in the area, and had many links with Surrey. Clement Attlee, then Prime Minister, who had family connections with Dorking, opened the new stones — Mr Attlee's brother is buried in Dorking Cemetery. A short distance downstream is an iron footbridge, built as a memorial to members of the Ramblers Association who lost their lives in the two World Wars.
