More about this scene

The building in the foreground was the Chequers, an alehouse since the early 15th century, which closed in 1939. The room over the archway was the Reading Room, later a school room for evacuees during the war. The house beyond was the forge, run by the Stone family, who were also parish sextons. Walter Bowers is driving the carrier's cart.

The horse and waggon is under the control of Mr Walter Bowers. He was our carrier. He would take my rabbits and my mother's chickens and eggs to market.
