Bramcote Children's Hospital

A Memory of Bramcote.

I was placed in Bramcote 1983 at the age of 9 for a year. I liked it a bit but only as I was getting physically abused by my step mum at home daily,it was a break from the beatings for a week,we would all go home at weekends except for the disabled block kids which scared the heck out of me. I have random memories of the place and there all pretty mental. I remember hardly any school education at all just loads of films, swimming at the pingles, horse riding general outdoor play and trips out. They are the good things I recall,I can tell you about the mental block next door building and the constant howling and strange noises at night. I shared my room with an anorexic girl, can't remember her name but she was way older and I didn't understand as I was so young. A Mr anil that would headbutt and beat up the boys regular,i hated him.The rooms walls were like made of glass so all the rooms were see through, only curtains to pull across for privacy, weird. The odd therapy circle were we had to sit around monday morning and tell the nurses what bad things we had done at home over the weekend. I would listen to some of the kids stories and think, I don't belong here, you are really mental! There was a kid that smeared his own shit over walls at home and the wards toilets and make animal noises, proper mental. I loved some of the teachers and kids though,we had a real laugh sometimes, and it was safer than being at home,my dad told me he thought he would come home from work and find me dead one day so he put me in Bramcote for protection, and I know they told the staff some dark suff to keep me there that I never did do. Still I survived and got some great outdoor education skills,if anyone remembers a little ginger girl with a bob, that loved e.t ,drop me a message!
