Syddal Farm Before The Shops Were Built
A Memory of Bramhall.
Syddal Farm was once the home of the Ashbrook family and originally stood on this site where the shops are standing in the photograph.
My Grandparents William Hannah and their children Jack and Betty farmed there
although Grandfather passed away in his forties due to a weak heart. I think they
had dairy shorthorn cattle at that time.
The black and white farmhouse was demolished before WW2 I believe and Hannah
was one of 12 brothers and sisters and one of the Goulden family before her
marriage.
My mother Betty was not too keen on the old farm as you had to use a pump for water
but my grandmother when visiting her sister up Woodford Road hated to see it all laid
to waste before the shops were built.

with weeds and stones.
My Mum and Dad removed a few slabs
of stone as souvenirs.
My grandmother Elizabeth Ann Cookson spent time there, not sure at what age she was there or how long the family were tenant farmers, according to a soft paperback I have of Bygone Bramhall John Barlow was a tenant farmer at Syddal farm in 1871, and was followed by James Cookson, my great grandfather. Unfortunately I never talked to my grandmother about her life and time on the farm, I do have an original water colour of the farm, painted by J.H.S.D. in 1888. The two figures standing at the gate of the farm, I can only presume would be my great-grandparents. Elizabeth Ann Cookson married into the Glover family, who are also mentioned in the memories of Bygone Bramhall, which made a good starting place to trace back some of my family history. I remember the site where Syddal Farm once stood, and the stone steps leading up to the farm.
