More about this scene
This is High Street Inferior, with the centrepiece of a fanciful wrought iron structure providing three gas lanterns as well as a drinking fountain. The Medical Hall (right) is a grandly named chemist's shop owned by one Mr Charles. Immediately next door is the building where the actress Sarah Siddons was born in 1755. Originally The Shoulder of Mutton, it later took her name, and has ever since been a variation on the Sarah Siddons Inn.
