Kew Bridge Road
A Memory of Brentford.
My name is Ian Powell and lived at 48 Kew Bridge Road opposite the Plough and Waggon & Horses P/H. We arrived in 1947 when I was 6 mths old. I also had a younger sister Lynne who sadly passed earlier this year. Our house was prominent as it was the base for Globe Haulage whose lorries were constantly turning into the yard behind us .My father had worked for the company since before the war. I attended St Georges School along with many of my neighbours, Irene Morgan; Jennifer White, Ian & David Taylor, from Bangor Road and David Wise from Green Dragon Lane.We used to walk along that narrow Green Dragon Lane to school without a care in the world. Would not do that today. Actually, one cannot now as it was closed off for safety reasons.
Still have all my class photos that are available on other sites.Moved on to Brentford Secondary Modern in 1958, left in 1964.Worked for the London Ambulance Service for 35 years until high blood pressure got the better of me.
I still come to Brentford regularly but only on match days. Not moved far, in fact still living on the A315 but seven miles further on in Bedfont. As with most of our homes, ours was demolished along with the pubs. Cannot believe the apartments opposite fetch a couple of million pounds. When the Football Ground finally gets built, it will be like returning to my roots. As a kid, I spent a lot of time in that former rail yard when my dad was loading bricks from the trucks onto his lorry . Good memories all round.
