More about this scene
This village stands on Watling Street close by the Little Stour. Years after this photograph was taken, traffic passing through the long, winding main street with its pollarded trees made life unbearable for residents; after a long protest campaign, a bypass was opened in the late 1970s. Nearby Higham Park was once the home of Count Zborowski, whose racing exploits were the inspiration for the book 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' by Ian Fleming. The artist Jansen lived here for some time, the painter of the popular portrait of a lady 'The Star in the East'.
