More about this scene
Magdalene Almshouses (left), were rebuilt in 1877 on the site of a lazar-house or leper hospital, apparently founded by a member of the de Leyes or Legh family, in the early 13th century. The dedication was to St Mary Magdalene. At the time of the photograph it was for "eight deserving women" but this was reduced to four to ease overcrowding. Modernisation took place in 1955, financed by the Colfox Trust, when the number of units was increased to six. Beyond is Magdalen House (left of centre) with Old Magdalen opposite (right of centre).
