More about this scene
Bridport borough expanded north-westwards into Allington parish in 1835. Street names intially included 'Reform Place 1835' to commemorate electoral changes after the Boundary Commission had reported: 'The chief trade arises from the manufacture of hemp and flax, and Allington appears to be the resort of the poorer class of the population engaged in these manufactures.' By the time of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee, when this picture was taken, fashionable Allington Park had been established cheek by jowl with artisan terraces. The boys are standing beside the junction of Park Road. The houses ae Polly's and Clayhanger (left) and Stoke Lodge (cetre) with the terraces being No 16 to No 6 (right).
