More about this scene

The town's nautical connections are clearly seen is this early 20th-century view of the creek, crowded with sailing barges and boats. Famous for its boatyards, which still produce yachts and ships, Brightlingsea is a 'limb' of the Cinque Port of Sandwich, and the Deputy swears allegiance to the mayor of Sandwich. The town was once famous for its oysters, which were dredged from the creek.

I'm In The Boat!
The photo must have been taken in about 1963. The two people in the boat are me and my Dad. We had one of the first caravans on Point Clear and regularly got the ferry across to use the outdoor pool and boating lake. At the time we lived in South Benfleet but I have now lived in Brightlingsea with my family for the past twenty years. My parents joined us here 4 years ago. It is so strange to see us in this image.

Fish & Chips In Brightlingsea
During the late 40's and 50's we all travelled to Jaywick Sands for our summer and bank holidays and on the weekends made regular excursions to the nearby seaside resorts of Frinton and Walton-on-the Nase but my favourite was Brightlingsea, the main reason being that we went to collect winkles for a Sunday evening snack on returning home, complete with a pin for their removal. Childhood Holidays
I spent summer holidays at Jacobs several years in the 50s with my parents, Don and Clarice Harrison and sister Margery. We stayed with miss Holmes and her daughter Celia who was a gifted dancer who later gained a place at the Rambert dance school. Jacobs was a fascinating place for me as a 5 year old. My Grandfather Fred Scales
I was born in Brightlingsea and spent most of my childhood growing up there, my grandfather was Fred Scales, who ran the Boating Lake for a number of years and looked after the chalets and caravans, he was also a coal merchant and lived in Colne Road. Jennifer Dance, nee Collins, nee Scales PS. Grandfather is the man in the picture.

Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
