Caption for Bristol, Park Street 1900: For decades a major problem facing the Bristol Health Board was how to combat the daily stench during the summer months created by tons of horse droppings. An early experiment using water-carts to damp down the streets found that it took 7,000 gallons to water one mile of street, 18 feet in width, at a cost of 8s 4d per mile. The result of the 1861 experiment found that Bristol would need 83 carts to water the streets twice a day.
