The fishermen of Brixham refined the technique of trawling for their catch close to the bottom of the sea; this technique mostly replaced the earlier drifting. The sailing trawlers needed to work with the tide and a stiff wind - up to force six or seven - behind them if the nets were to be trawled successfully.
