An Aussie In Brixton

A Memory of Brixton.

I came to England on a working holiday with a mate in 1957. We were told of digs in Brixton (by an accommodation woman at the YMCA) at 37 Wiltshire Road and we lived there for about six months. It was one of the most wonderful times of my life - there were about ten young(ish) blokes living in the house that was owned by an elderly Swiss couple. We were naive country boys who discovered London with the help of the others living in the digs and fellow workers while working at GEC in Kingsway. We hitch-hiked or railed as far as we could every weekend. How wonderful it would be to have those days again.

I lived in may all road and worked as a kid in Brixton market. My dad drove the dustcasrt in the market from the early 60s until his death in 1971. I am looking forany photos of the market stalls, dust carts or anything within the market.

I'm sorry I can't help you with this one. I was only there in 1957 and I'm sorry to say, didn't take any photographs.

I lived in Trent road Brixton hill water lane in the 50s my best friend lived next door my name was Madeline Johnson then her name Jean bacon we used to have great fun, she had a sister Linda I think a bit younger. We used to go to Saturday morning pictures, Brockwell park and buy lovely ice cream and sweets from the big house there, very happy days. Brixton was a great place to live, loved going to Brockwell park swimming baths. We was always giggling. Loved playing in the street never see kids do that now. I would love to know how she is getting on if anyone knows her.

Thank you Madeline. My short time in Brixton was one of the best times of my life. Getting to know London with the other lads in our digs and with the people at the GEC in Kingsway where we worked. I have tried to get in touch with some of them but have been unable to find them.
