More about this scene
A large crowd is gathered on the beach in the centre of this photograph, possibly to watch 'Uncle Mac and his Minstrels.' They had blacked-up faces and wore a sort of clown outfit with pom-poms down the front. They played twice daily on the beach. There were song contests for the children, who sat on the sand, and the adults paid to sit on deckchairs. At night they played to an adult audience on the jetty. Uncle Mac was the older man, and played a banjo, and there were Uncles Jack, John and others. Uncle Jack was the children's favourite.
