More about this scene
Burford has not always been the peaceful place we see today. In AD 752 the Saxons defeated the Mercians in a fierce fight in the field close to the church now known as Battle Edge. In the Civil War Oliver Cromwell and Sir Thomas Fairfax incarcerated 340 mutinous troopers in Burford church. Three were later executed by firing squad in the churchyard, and a fourth was made to preach a sermon of repentance, which he did 'howling and weeping like a crocodile'.
