Charles Of The Ritz ,Burgess Hill
A Memory of Burgess Hill.
I worked for Charles Of The Ritz in the late 1960's in the warehouse at the London Road end of Victoria Road, preparing and despatching the orders . We also prepared orders for Christian Dior, Yves St Laurent and Jean Nate.I worked with Ethel, Kay, Alma , Brian, Les, and George. The van drivers were Mick and Ray.
I can especially remember the gorgeous Christmas packaging for the big London Stores, lots of tinsel and bells!
We had a "free issue" every month of cosmetics and toiletries which was amazing for a 16 year old!
Wages were in a brown envelope with the notes peeping out at the top so that you could count them before you opened the envelope. Coins could be counted thro' the perforations! We had fish and chips every Friday.
I can still remember the lovely smells of the perfumes as we walked up and down the bays making up the orders! Really happy days.
Annette Langley.
