Happy Carefree Days Growing Up In Burgess Hill

A Memory of Burgess Hill.

I lived in Burgess Hill from 1961 - 1980 with my adopted Parents Ray and Margaret Harbour and their daughter Alison I went to London road C.P. school from 1963 - 1968 my classmates were Alison Webb, caroline Rodgers, Martin Duffy Stephen Ide who I share a birthday with 60! Richard brough Andrew Burrell and my good friend Amanda Caukwell who I later went to the PNEU with now Burgess hill school for girls Amanda and I often went to tea with each other and I remember her mother Jenny fondly, sadly I lost contact with Amanda many years ago. She loved to watch our telly though and we enjoyed many a cycle ride around the leafy lanes. My favourite memories were of the outdoor swimming pool the summers never rained back then! also I loved spending my pocket money at the corner sweetshop next to the school and the sunshine café my favourites humbugs sherbert dips and fountains and anything chewy. I went to the girl guides at the church near hoadleys Hill with my good friend Hilary Whitticks whose father was chairman of midsussex district council. I lived in Firtoft close off Mill road and remember all the neighbours being really nice especially The Andersons ,The Robsons,The Hearns and my good friend Miranda Goodman and her Aunty Iris and uncle Jack who lived opposite her parents in a bungalow. I had a lovely childhood growing up in Firtoft close and have many happy memories of the place I have been back on several occasions to take a trip down memory lane sadly it looks very different now London road cp school has long gone Woolworths the pick and mix but it always good to see childhood friend Martin Stoner running his fathers old Jewellers business one thing that has not changed.

my name was Ruth Harbour then
My paternal grandmother, Ellen O'Brien, lived at 4 Ivy Cottages, Freeks Lane, Burgess Hill in1943 - possibly moved in with family having been 'bombed out' in London.
Does anyone have photographs of Ivy Cottages? or know the history of Freeks Lane? - the modern map looks massively different to the 1940's version!
Thank you!
