According to local lore, a mermaid was washed ashore here on a wild and stormy night in 1757. This maritime visitor was 13ft in length; the upper parts were human, but it had a fishy tail and no legs. Legend unkindly relates that far from being beautiful, the mermaid had rather a masculine appearance!
