Henry I gave the village and living of Burton Bradstock to the great Normandy abbey at Caen in exchange for the royal regalia of William the Conqueror, which the monks claimed had been gifted to them by the dying king. This lovely village was considered a reasonable exchange for England's crown jewels.

I have so many memories of Burton Bradstock. My brother and I sometimes stayed with an aunt and uncle there for the annual escape from the Midlands, where we lived. Often, these visits engendered large family outings to the beach. Oh, the misery of those early bathing costumes!
