Bush Hill, Elmscott Gardens c.1955

More about this scene
Look carefully at the unified appearance of this cul-de-sac as it backs onto Bush Hill Golf course. Look at the everyday houses which not long ago were taken for granted, and even ridiculed as semi-detached suburbia. Look at the timber windows with their coloured glass, the original front doors, the solid, yet attractive, garage doors, the original gates and boundary walls, and realise that all this has for the greater part disappeared. Unaltered pairs of such houses do exist, but most have received the treatment meted out at the hands of the double-glazing salesman and the need to park that extra car in the front garden. Look carefully at these houses, and then look about you forty-five years on. Soon they may be listed as rare architectural survivals.
