Derby Cinema
A Memory of Caergwrle.
I grew up in Hope Village from about 1940 to 1948.
I used to go to the Derby Cinema for the Saturday Matinee.
I remember the cashier was Mr. Eccleston who lived a couple of houses away from the cinema. He was short and rotund and we used to call him "Harry Eck" We used to walk down from Hope, and always checked out the red telephone kiosk down the street from the cinema to see if anyone had forgotten their change in the refund slot.
I think a Mr. Jervis from Hope Village owned the cinema. He was driven around in a large baby blue American car by a chauffeur. Our Dr. was Dr.Dallin from Caergwrle.
I used to go to Hope school and lived right in front of it. My school friends were Terry Rogers, Gwylym Edwards, his mother was Blodwyn Edwards. Barbara Berry, her mother was Joyce Grandy. Does anyone know if any of these people are still around - I would love to make contact again.

The usherette at the time was a Mrs Challoner, mother of a large family who lived - still live? - in Bryn Yorkin. She had only one eye, and she used it, with her torch, to keep a very strict watch on the back rows! Ah. Happy days. The village wasn't the same when I last paid a fleeting visit last summer. The HSBC bank - the Midland when my family occupied the building - has closed down. What'll become of my house!!?
