My Life At Welbec Secondry Modern School An The St Hellier Est
A Memory of Calmore.
I went to Welbeck Secondry Modern school for the last 2 years of my school life. At 13 I passed a 13+ exam and at Welbeck we underwent a 2 year basic building course. We did all the building trade: bricklaying, carpentry, technical drawing, history of building, building science etc. Our teacher was Eric Bushnell, a man who made everything interesting. I could not have had a more influential teacher. On a Saturday he taught tech. drawing at Ewell Tech. Three of we boys went there in our own time to be in his class. It's the only 'o' level I ever gained.
The Headmaster, Mr Head (!!) took a group on holiday to the continent to the World Exhibition in Brussels. Quite an experience - we saw colour TV in the American hall for the first time in 1958. My pal was Charlie Dowell who lived in Green Wrythe Lane. I am still in contact with him and he lives in Bath.
After leaving school I went to Ewell Tech full time and did a years Basic Building course which now included plumbing (hated this) and painting and decorating. In 1960 I joined the Army as an apprentice painter and completed a 3 year apprenticeship. I'm now retired and live in Essex.
