Originally called Cambridge Town, in honour of the Duke of Cambridge who founded the Army Staff College here, its name had to be changed to avoid confusion within the postal service with its university counterpart. But the military presence ensured the town's growth. In the year this picture was taken, patrons at the Camberley Electric Theatre ((left) would have been thrilled by such silent epics of the screen as Bridal Chair, with its star Miriam J Sabbage, The Further Exploits of Sexton Blake, and In Bondage, featuring Sidney Fairbrother.

France Hill School
I lived in Rivermead road for a while in 1963/4… I remember being friends with Denise Davies. And a girl called Julie who lived at the bottom of the road, near Crabtree road… We went to a primary school just round the corner from Crabtree road, but I can’t remember the name of the school. The Jolly Farmer
I was born in Camberley in 1953, we lived in Caesars Camp road which joined the A30 London Road just along from the Jolly Farmer pub which stood at the junction of Gibbets Lane. The story we were brought up with is that is was so called because that's where the Highway Man "Dick Turpin" was hanged. The Gibbet being another name for the scaffolding that was put up to hang people in those days. The name of the pub ...see more

Camberley I Knew 1945ish.
As a young child I moved to Camberley in the early stages of the war when my dad was called up and posted to the RAE in Farnbrough. We lived in Woodlands Road which was very different to the way it is today. Some of the houses had very large gardens that are now small estates. My First Shopping Expedition Park Road Post Office
We lived in Lower Gordon Road..... I used to be sent to get my Mother's shopping here. I remember the post office - the lovely cluttery feel... the sweets. The first savings book and the first of my many collections. The tea cards.. which I adored. I remember feeling so grown up being sent to get the shopping. But they would deliver. I was away at School. I remember taking my next two sisters one by one over to the shop to buy a penny worth of sweets..... oh yes first memeories of a shop .

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
