More about this scene
The rustic bridge parapets over the brook also look like John Hicks's work. The model village became a popular destination for sightseers, who travelled from Bournemouth in horse-drawn charabancs, to be greeted by a trumpet fanfare. Autumn was the favourite season, when the Virginia creeper shrouding the cottages was at its scarlet best and the roadside chestnuts were golden.
