William Longsword, Earl of Salisbury, held the lordship of the manor through the reigns of Richard I, John and Henry III. Longsword persuaded King John to sign Magna Carta and witnessed the charter himself. His own copy of Magna Carta may still be seen in Salisbury Cathedral.
