Along The Barking Road
A Memory of Canning Town.
I was born at 37 Alexandra Street. At the corner where our street met the Barking Road, opposite Star Lane and Mulcasters seed shop, was the bombed Odeon where we would play as children. I recall a pea souper fog in the late 40s or early 50s where I literally could not see my hand in front of my face. We were a few doors away from Farinos shop where they made the best ice cream ever. We moved to Hayday Road when I was three and I went to Ravenscroft Primary school and then Plaistow Grammar School. Before I left PGS we had moved to Barking at the far end of Barking Road.
